Marciello ends a great year in Abu Dhabi
The curtain has fallen on the 2016 season of the GP2 Series. The eleventh and final stage of the competition – which saw Marciello finishing third (ex-aequo) in the drivers’ standings – took place last weekend on the Yas Marina track, in Abu Dhabi. It has been an important year for Raffaele, who demonstrated full maturity as a driver – a fact backed by the numbers that sum up the entire season.
Not only did Raffaele obtain points in nineteen of the twenty-two races he took part in (finishing all feature-races within the top ten positions), he also speeded under the checkered flag in all twenty-two – thereby covering 100% of the season’s distance. Such an achievement is a testament to his professionalism, and to the growth of a driver who has been able to make the most of all conditions and challenges that the races threw at him.
“Unfortunately the final stage didn’t go as we hoped”, Marciello explains, “because during the weekend we haven’t been able to find the right setup for the car – and the performance suffered to the point that we couldn’t fight for the top positions. In race-1 I started from the fourth row on the grid, so we tried a different strategy than that of our direct opponents in order to climb back up.”
“Our plan was to reach the top eight so we could benefit from a good starting position in race-2, but after the pit-stop I had to avoid a rogue tire roaming in the box lane. I lost precious seconds which ended up costing me a few positions, and I finished tenth. This, of course, crushed our remaining hopes to fight for the podium in race-2 – which ended up being a painful affair that saw me fall out of the top ten because of a collision.
For Raffaele, who finished the season with 159 points to his name, it is now time to take stock: “It has been an hard-fought season, without a doubt, because competing with teams such as ART and Prema is not a walk in the park. I understood early on that the only weapon available would be consistence – meaning the ability of making the most of the opportunities that would come up race after race, regardless of the conditions. On the track the competition level is sky-high, and reducing risks is a big challenge. I have tried my best, and I believe that the final standings show that my approach paid off.”
“The one thing I feel lacked is a victory. I came close so many times, and I have raced in front during more laps than drivers that sit above me in the standings. Sometimes I failed because luck wasn’t on my side, sometimes because of a flawed strategy, but in the end I cannot blame myself too much. I believe that I have guaranteed a solid, professional contribution to the team during all of the season – which means I did my job well, and this, for a driver, is a huge source of pride and gratification.

Marciello conclude un gran 2016 ad Abu Dhabi
È calato il sipario sulla stagione 2016 della GP2 Series. Sul tracciato di Yas Marina, ad Abu Dhabi, si è disputata lo scorso fine settimana l’undicesima ed ultima tappa del campionato che ha visto Raffaele Marciello occupare la terza posizione finale (ex-aequo) nella classifica riservata ai piloti. E’ stato un 2016 importante per Raffaele, che ha messo in campo una grande maturità evidenziata dalle cifre che riassumono l’intera stagione.
Oltre ad aver concluso in zona punti diciannove delle ventidue corse disputate (terminando nella top-10 tutte le feauture-race) Raffaele è transitato sotto la bandiera a scacchi in tutte le gare, arrivando a percorrere il 100% della distanza stagionale. Una prova di grande professionalità, che ha evidenziato la crescita di un pilota capace di gestire al meglio tutte le condizioni e le situazioni di gara. “Purtroppo la tappa finale della stagione non è andata come speravamo alla vigilia – ha commentato – perché nell’arco del weekend non siamo riusciti a trovare il giusto setup della monoposto e la performance non ci ha consentito di lottare per le posizioni di vertice. In gara-1 sono partito dalla quarta fila dello schieramento, ed abbiamo provato a differenziare la strategia rispetto agli avversari diretti per provare a rimontare”.
“Il piano prevedeva di puntare alla top-8 – ha spiegato Raffaele – in modo da poter aver un’ottima posizione di partenza in gara-2, ma purtroppo nelle fasi successive al pit-stop ho trovato davanti a me un pneumatico che vagava nella corsia box. Ho perso secondi preziosi, che mi sono costati posizioni nella classifica finale, e mi sono così dovuto accontentare del decimo posto. Ovviamente questo risultato ha precluso anche la possibilità di ambire al podio in gara-2, ed infatti quella disputata domenica è stata una corsa sofferta, che mi ha visto uscire dalla top-10 dopo un contatto con un avversario”.
Terminata la stagione con 159 punti, per Raffaele è tempo di bilanci: “È stato indubbiamente un campionato impegnativo, perché lottare contro top-team come ART e Prema non è certo semplice. Ho capito che l’unica arma a mia disposizione sarebbe stata la costanza di rendimento, ovvero la capacità di saper cogliere tutte le opportunità che si sarebbero presentate gara dopo gara, in ogni condizione. In pista c’è un livello di agonismo molto elevato, e riuscire a limitare i rischi si è dimostrato impegnativo. Ho cercato di fare tutto al meglio delle mie possibilità, e credo che la classifica finale premi questo approccio”.
“È mancata la vittoria di tappa – ha concluso ‘Lello’ – ci sono andato vicino molte volte coprendo un numero di giri in prima posizione maggiore anche di piloti che mi hanno preceduto nella classifica finale. A volte sono mancate le circostanze favorevoli, a volte la strategia, ma non ho molto da rimproverarmi. Credo di aver garantito un contributo professionale alla mia squadra nell’arco dell’intera stagione, e questo bilancio per un pilota è sempre una grande gratificazione”.
