FIRST PODIUM FOR MARCIELLO IN THE WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Last weekend, on the Fuji track, right at the feet of the famous landmark, Marciello and Team WRT celebrated their first podium in the World Endurance Championship 2024 – which had reached its 7th stage.
In qualifying, Marciello’s teammate Dries Vanthoor finished sixth with 1:29.505, then he bettered his time in the Hyperpole (1:29.059) and placed the BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 on the third spot on the grid, a mere tenth of a second from the pole (the best result in qualifying this season).
In the 6-hours race that followed, Marco Wittmann drove first and immediately sped up to second. After an hour and a half, the team took advantage of a virtual safety car to make a pit stop and put Marciello in charge. The Ticino driver got back on the track in third and got tangled up in a fight for the second spot with a Cadillac, a Ferrari, and a Toyota. The choice to use an alternative strategy meant the odds were against Marciello though, as his tires were constantly more worn than his opponents’. After two hours he handed the wheel to Vanthoor, who re-entered the fray in fourth. Soon, another virtual safety car was deployed, allowing the team to complete their strategy by stopping at the box and thus moving up to second. Vanthoor then kept the position until the finish line and obtained the team’s first podium of the season in the hypercar category.
The Fuji result also had a positive impact on the drivers’ standings, which now see Marciello in 15th with 24 points, while in the Constructors’ championship, BMW sits in 5th place with 49 points, 3 points behind Alpine.
The last stage of the World Endurance Championship 2024, the 8h of Bahrain, will take place in Sakhir on November 2nd.
PRIMO PODIO PER RAFFAELE MARCIELLO NEL WORLD ENDURACE CHAMPIONSHIP
Si conclude con un podio l’avventura giapponese di Raffaele Marciello, sul circuito del Fuji. L’autodromo situato ai piedi dell’omonimo monte ha ospitato il settimo appuntamento del World Endurance Championship 2024. Il pilota svizzero ha partecipato all’evento alla guida della BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 del team WRT assieme ai suoi compagni Dries Vanthoor e Marco Wittmann, in categoria Hypercar.
In qualifica il team ha affidato le proprie speranze a Dries, che ha registrato un 1:29.505 utile per ottenere la sesta posizione e, soprattutto, l’accesso alla hyperpole. Nella fase più importante che stabilisce la griglia di partenza per la gara, Dries ha migliorato il proprio tempo grazie a un 1:29.059 che lo ha piazzato in terza posizione, la migliore della stagione, a poco più di un decimo di secondo dalla pole position.
Il team WRT ha iniziato la 6 ore del Fuji con Wittmann, il quale ha subito ottenuto il secondo posto grazie a un ottimo spunto. Tuttavia, la BMW è tornata terza durante la sosta ai box per affidare la vettura a Raffaele Marciello, avvenuta dopo un’ora e mezza sfruttando la virtual safety car. Il pilota di Zurigo ha adottato una strategia alternativa che lo ha visto in lotta per la seconda posizione contro Cadillac, Ferrari e Toyota. La strategia è stata di difficile attuazione in quanto Marciello si è trovato costantemente con le gomme più consumate rispetto ai rivali. Dopo due ore di guida, il volante è passato a Vanthoor, uscendo dai box in quarta posizione. A poco meno di due ore dal termine della corsa, una virtual safety car ha garantito le possibilità di podio per il team WRT, che ha sfruttato la situazione fermandosi ai box e ottenendo così la seconda piazza uniformando la strategia. Vanthoor ha mantenuto il passo e ha dunque tagliato il traguardo confermando il primo podio stagionale in categoria hypercar.
La gara del Fuji ha portato un’ottima spinta in classifica piloti, nella quale Marciello si trova ora in 15esima posizione con 24 punti, mentre in classifica costruttori la BMW è quinta con 49 punti, 3 di distanza dalla Alpine. Il prossimo appuntamento del World Endurance Championship 2024 sarà il round conclusivo a Sakhir, dove si terrà la 8h del Bahrain il 2 novembre.
