My helmets
When you race at 300 km/h inside a tight cockpit, inches from the asphalt, safety must always come first. A driver cannot leave anything to chance, which is why choosing the right helmet is so important. This year I will use four helmets: one at the wheel of the Sauber, one for the Ferrari, and two – for wet and dry weather – during the GP2 races. I contacted Bell, the world’s leading helmet company, and found exactly what I was looking for. My helmets feature similar designs, but the colors are different: I chose carbon black because I wanted an aggressive look but also because it is slightly more lightweight; then I picked red, because I like the color, but mostly because it is… Ferrari! The last one is gold, in honor of my unlucky friend Jules Bianchi, who loves this color – so he will always be close to me. All helmets have been custom made for me. In order to minimize the weight, the size has been slightly reduced – but without compromising safety and comfort: the latter is essential, as the helmet is worn for long periods of time and under stressful conditions. Although I am not obsessed with customizing the look of my helmets, I do like – like most of my colleagues – to add my personal touch. At the end of the season I take them home and add them to my collection. I now own dozens, and each reminds me of races won and good weekends, but also of less happy moments. A helmet is like a book: it tells stories. But most important, it keeps me safe. So to everybody out there riding bikes and scooters, never forget your faithful helmet: wear with pride!

I miei caschi
Per chi viaggia a 300 all’ora in uno stretto abitacolo, a pochi centimetri dall’asfalto, la sicurezza è una priorità assoluta. Un pilota come me non può e non deve lasciare nulla al caso e anche la scelta del casco va fatta con calma. Quest’anno ne userò 4: uno quando guiderò la Sauber, uno per la Ferrari e due – uno per il bagnato e uno per l’asciutto – quando sarò impegnato in GP2. Mi sono rivolto a una delle aziende leader, ovvero la Bell, trovando quello che cercavo. I caschi hanno disegni molto simili, ma colori diversi: ho scelto il nero-carbonio per dare un tocco di aggressività al casco e anche per scalare qualche grammo di peso (si risparmia proprio su tutto); poi il rosso, un po’ perché mi piace molto e poi perché è… Ferrari! Infine, l’oro in onore del mio sfortunato amico Jules Bianchi, che ama questo colore. Così l’avrò sempre vicino. Sono ovviamente caschi costruiti appositamente per me, su misura. Per guadagnare altri preziosi grammi, le dimensioni esterne sono state leggermente ridotte, senza però pregiudicare sicurezza e comfort, aspetto questo comunque importante visto che lo si indossa per un periodo piuttosto lungo e in condizioni di stress. Non sono un fanatico del casco, però come tutti i miei colleghi mi piace personalizzarlo e alla fine della stagione me lo porto a casa e lo metto assieme agli altri: ormai sono decine e mi ricordano ognuno una gara vinta, un weekend andato bene, una stagione ricca di soddisfazioni, ma anche qualche momento meno bello. Il casco è come un libro: racconta delle storie. Finisco chiedendo a tutti coloro che vanno in moto o in scooter di indossare sempre il casco e di allacciarlo bene: mi raccomando!
