MORE POINTS FOR MARCIELLO IN AUSTIN, TEXAS
After obtaining his first points in the 6h of São Paulo, Marciello confirmed his good form in the sixth stage of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), which took place in Austin, Texas.
The Americha track, known to be one of the most technical of the competition, puts a strain not only on the physical resistance of drivers, but also on the cars. Marciello and the whole BMW – WRT team were up to the challenge though, as demonstrated by their 7th place in the free sessions. Dries Vanthoor then drove in qualifying and placed the BMW M Hybrid V8 #15 in the top-10, just 56 thousandths of a second from the other BMW.
In the race, Marco Wittmann sprinted from 8th to 4th, but with 4h21 to go, a spin in the snake of the first sector pushed the #15 back to 11th place. An out-of-bounds overtaking then added a 5 seconds penalty, pushing the the team to bring forward the second stop. Marciello got back on the track in 17th and went on the offensive: in his 2-hour double stint he completed 66 laps and brought the #15 back to 8th, recording the best time of the team so far (1:53.231, then surpassed by just 9 thousandths). He then handed the wheel to Dries Vanthoor, who drove for the last 2h09 hours and defended the position until the finish line.
This result confirms the growth of both Marciello (in his first prototypes season) and the team, and boosts their confidence for the last two races of the competition – the first of which, the 6 hours of Fuji, will take place on September 15th. In the meantime, Marciello will race int the Donington Park stage of the British GT on September 5th-8th.
RAFFAELE MARCIELLO A PUNTI ANCHE AD AUSTIN, TEXAS
Raffaele Marciello conferma la zona punti nel sesto appuntamento del FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). La tappa si è svolta sul circuito dell Americha, ad Austin, per la Lone Star Le Mans della durata di 6 ore. Il tracciato è tra i più tecnici in calendario, con una configurazione molto selettiva e la presenza di numerosi bumps, in particolar modo lungo ppt veloce tratto guidato del primo settore. Questo mette a dura prova non solo la resistenza fisica dei piloti, ma oltremodo quella meccanica delle stesse vetture.
A bordo della BMW M Hybrid V8, nella sua stagione di debutto con i prototipi, Marciello è reduce dai primi punti conquistati nel FIA WEC durante la 6 Ore di Interlagos. Il circuito di Austin conferma il trend di crescita di tutto il team BMW – WRT a partire dalle prove libere, nel quale l’equipaggio della vettura numero #15
(Raffaele Marciello/Dries Vanthoor/Marco Wittmann) si piazza in 7ª posizione come miglior risultato nella seconda delle tre sessioni.
La qualifica, come per il resto della stagione, viene affidata a Dries Vanthoor, il quale riesce a qualificarsi per la Hyperpole, piazzandosi in Top-10 a 56 millesimi dalla vettura gemella.
La #15 scatta dalla quarta fila, in 8ª casella, con Marco Wittmann al volante. La partenza del tedesco è positiva, in quanto riesce subito a recuperare posizioni – fino alla 4ª – stando fuori dai contatti. Tuttavia, a 4h21 dalla bandiera a scacchi, un testacoda nello snake del primo settore relega la #15 in 11ª posizione, ai quali si aggiungono 5 secondi di penalità per un sorpasso fuori dai limiti del tracciato. Il team BMW-WRT, visto il tempo perso, opta per anticipare la seconda sosta. Marciello entra in macchina a 4h18 dal termine, tornando in pista in 17ª posizione.
Da questo momento inizia la rimonta grazie ad una serie di giri veloci del pilota elvetico: Marciello completa un doppio stint da 2h08 complessivi, registrando il miglior crono dell’equipaggio – fino a quel momento – in 1:53.231 (poi battuto di soli 9 millesimi).
Al termine dei 66 giri al volante della BMW M Hybrid V8, la numero #15 torna tra le prime 10 posizioni, nonostante le soste anticipate. Marciello lascia la vettura nelle mani di Vanthoor a 2h09 dalla conclusione in 8ª posizione, confermata poi al traguardo.
Seconda volta consecutiva quindi in zona punti per la #15; un risultato che conferma la crescita di Marciello sui prototipi oltre che di tutta la squadra WRT sulla M Hybrid V8, in vista delle ultime due gare della
stagione.
Il FIA WEC tornerà in pista il 15 settembre per la 6 Ore del Fuji. Raffaele Marciello sarà invece già al volante nel prossimo weekend del 5-8 settembre per il round di Donington Park del British GT, al volante della BMW M4 GT3.
